Abstract

In light of the new course offerings for Master's degrees, this article takes a look at the characteristics of Germany's library traineeships (Referendariat). It is important, first of all, to become integrated into the institutional framework of the chosen profession while gaining a theoretical foundation along the way. In this way intensive practical experience is attained. The generalized nature of the program ensures the acquisition of flexible decision-making skills and competencies. Similar to traineeships in the business sector, the selection of applicants according to their potential is also comparable. Adequate remuneration during the traineeship is an important advantage when seeking to attract qualified candidates. The wide spectrum of paths toward qualification can be viewed positively as it takes into account the various backgrounds of the candidates and allows greater flexibility. The traineeship remains the optimal program for university graduates who do not yet have any further professional training. These graduates, in particular, are of growing importance for academic libraries since they can identify and promote the services required for academic teaching and research at the appropriate level for their clientele.
