Abstract

Various home phototherapy models are available, ranging from full body units, small panel, to handheld units. The Narrow-Band Ultraviolet B Phototherapy (NB-UVB) hand and foot unit can be used to treat vitiligo that is limited to the hands and feet. Other types of UV-based treatment for vitiligo include targeted phototherapy using excimer laser or excimer lamp, and PUVA. NB-UVB has an excellent safety profile, and can be administered to children, pregnant and lactating women, and patients with hepatic and renal diseases. Repigmentation begins at the hair follicle, where NB-UVB stimulates the activation, proliferation and migration of melanocytes from the outer root sheath to the adjacent epidermis. This chapter summarises the efficacy of NB-UVB monotherapy in adult and childhood vitiligo. Rotational treatment using phototherapy and medical treatments should be carried out to maintain repigmentation. The tacrolimus-treated patients showed a statistically significantly better median repigmentation.
