Abstract

This chapter presents an image processing method for quantitative transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of recording media. Specifically, multilevel image segmentation is applied to characterize aggregated magnetic nanoparticles. This allows for the measurement of the grain size distribution. The Lennard-Jones (LJ) potential energy model is then applied to measure the dispersion of the nanoparticles. This image processing procedure allows for the rapid inspection of FePt film in industrial experimental heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) media. First, the chapter reviews the HAMR, and then, presents the FePt media and the synthesizing of nanoparticles. Next, it presents image processing procedure which leads image segmentation and separation of aggregated nanoparticles, and provides experimental results and comparison to other methods. Then, the chapter presents the application of LJ potential energy model to characterize dispersion index of nanoparticles. Finally, a summary is provided.
