Enjoyment in learning Korean as a foreign language: Learner subjectivity in Thailand

Using Q methodology, this study assesses learning enjoyment in KFL among undergraduate students who took KFL as an elective course. Coming from a variety of disciplines(e.g., Business Administration, Science, Computer Science, Foreign Languages), participants sorted a deck of statements into a forced-distribution grid. After an inverted factor analysis, participants were grouped into two clusters based on their collective viewpoints. While the first group represents a viewpoint in which teachers are the dominant source of enjoyment, the second group represents a viewpoint in which classmates play a critical role in fostering enjoyment. From these findings, several pedagogical implications can be drawn. Teachers are advised to recognise that their personal engagement and approachability serve as core motivators. They are also encouraged to promote collaboration and discussion among classmates, especially by leveraging the diversity of students’ academic backgrounds.
