Abstract
The corrosion susceptibility of friction stir welds (FSW) in the aerospace alloy 2024 was examined with gel visualization, intergranular corrosion testing, and local microelectrochemical measurements. Both the nugget zone and heat-affected zone (HAZ) showed enhanced anodic reactivity associated with intergranular attack. The nugget zone also showed greater cathodic reactivity as a result of increased precipitation of intermetallic particles. The location of corrosion attack was found to vary with weld processing parameters. For a low toolpiece rotation rate, attack is predominantly in the nugget zone, whereas for higher toolpiece rotation rates, attack is predominantly in the HAZ. Corrosion susceptibility of FSWs is substantially improved by laser treatment with an excimer laser, which forms a highly homogeneous layer with low anodic and cathodic reactivity.
