Abstract

Autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA) is characterized by premature destruction of erythrocytes by autoantibodies acting against one's own red blood cell (RBC) antigens. The hallmark of this disorder is a positive direct Coombs test (also referred to as direct antiglobulin test, DAT) from which the causative immune complexes can be sub-identified into immunoglobulin (Ig) G, IgM and complement C3d. The disease manifestations and treatment options vary, depending on the aetiology of AIHA and DAT profile.
