Abstract

Anaemia in neonates is diagnosed when the haemoglobin level is lower than minus two standard deviations (-2SD) from the mean for the corresponding gestational and chronological age. Anaemia that occurs during the neonatal period should be considered separately from that happens in older infants and children, due to significant changes happening in red blood cell (RBC) components and physiology from fetal period to the first 3-4 months of life.
