A generic product and process design ontology

Abstract

This paper addresses issues of product and process design for enterprises, how to capture design knowledge, and design knowledge reuse in the design process. We have constructed a generic product and process design ontology to show the usefulness of an ontology model to a collaborative design team. In the context of product and process design, the ontology is a computationally tractable representation of what kinds of things and associations experts recognize in a given domain [1][2]. An ontology model includes much more that just "dictionary" information. It seeks to identify the primary classes, or kinds of objects that are within the domain.
