Asst. Prof. Dr. Sarawut Kraisame is a linguist whose academic and research pursuits are deeply rooted in the intersections of phonetics, sociophonetics, and the linguistic heritage of Southeast Asia. With a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Mahidol University, Dr. Kraisame currently serves as the Deputy Director for Education and Special Affairs at the Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia (RILCA), Mahidol University. He also acts as the Secretary of the M.A. and Ph.D. Programs in Linguistics, where he mentors students and supports curriculum development with a commitment to academic rigor and cultural relevance.

Dr. Kraisame’s research is marked by a sustained engagement with underrepresented linguistic communities and languages at risk. His core areas of expertise include acoustic phonetics, sociophonetics, theoretical phonology, Quranic phonology, Austronesian linguistics, and language documentation. He has developed speech corpora for low-resource languages, conducted cross-generational phonetic analysis of Pattani Malay, and investigated the phonological characteristics of Qur’anic recitation using instrumental phonetic methods. His interdisciplinary work also addresses the relationship between language, identity, and traditional ecological knowledge, especially among maritime and ethnic minority communities.

Dr. Kraisame’s leadership is also evident in numerous funded research projects. He has led initiatives supported by national agencies such as the National Higher Education Science Research and Innovation Policy Council, the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC), and Mahidol University. Notable among these is his pioneering work on phonetic variation in Pattani Malay and the development of digital platforms for cross-border health communication for Burmese migrants.

In addition to research, Dr. Kraisame is passionate about integrating traditional linguistic scholarship with emerging technologies and community empowerment. His work often bridges theoretical linguistics with applied goals—particularly in supporting marginalized communities, preserving intangible cultural heritage, and informing policy through empirical linguistic research.

He is regularly invited to speak on language endangerment, language identity, and multilingualism, and has reviewed scholarly works across various journals. Whether through academic writing, curriculum innovation, or grassroots linguistic documentation, Dr. Kraisame continues to shape the field of Southeast Asian linguistics with scholarly excellence, cultural sensitivity, and a firm belief in the transformative power of language.
